The term “Hen on Nest” was coined by the Westmoreland Glass Company in the 1930’s, but these dishes are also referred to as an “animal dish”, “trinket box”,  “hen in a basket”, and more.

Slag Glass is sometimes referred to as “marble glass”. Its namesake is derived from the original method by which it was created…. in the late 1800’s Slag Glass was made using “silicate slag” which is an ingredient that forms as molten iron ore cools. This ingredient was added and mixed with the glass in the molten state to create this marbled effect (popular in many glass lampshades you might remember!) Other methods were later developed for creating this beautiful glassware, but the Slag name stuck!
